ISUPs and Dogs

Paddleboarding, even on inflatables, is not one to be only enjoyed by humans. A fascinating trend of ISUP owners taking their dogs out with them while paddleboarding has emerged and dogs seems to enjoy it just as much as humans.

I’ve taken my dogs out on the water before and I must admit they seem to love it. There’s also something very peaceful about having your companion sat at the front of your board as helping to navigate. There hasn’t been one occasion that they’ve been alarmed or I’ve feared for their safety yet it doesn’t mean I can switch off – I take extra special care when riding with my dog and so should you.

There are a number of key things to note when considering which ISUP to buy if you’re planning to take your dog out on the water with you. I’ve compiled my top 3 picks for ISUP owners with dogs.

Naish One Inflatable Stand-Up Paddleboard

Naish One Inflatable SUP (126”)

  • The Board is Huge: Size naturally plays a large part when looking to take a dog on board too. While many boards will comfortably fit both man and dog, the Naish One offers that bit more space with a full 12-feet of board to play with
  • A Stable ISUP: Another key component is stability. You don’t want the board to wobble often which may unsettle your dog or worse tip him/her off. The Naish One, due to it’s base size does the job perfectly and is one of the more stable ISUPs on the market
  • Designed for Flat Water: You’ll want to be taking your dog out on flat water only (is my general rule) and the Naish One is designed for flat water purposes - a win win scenario
  • Weight Limit: Is higher than many of it’s competitors meaning you won’t have any worries about fitting a dog on the board too

  • Price: The Naish One is a notably expensive ISUP yet, in my opinion, you get what you pay for. This is a classic touring ISUP

Starboard Astro Whopper Deluxe Inflatable SUP (10'0")

  • Not a Quick ISUP: Often this may be a negative point, but considering that you’re buying with a dog in mind too then a leisurely pace is perfect and you won’t be able to reach high speeds on the Astro Whopper
  • Another Big Board: Unsurprisingly size wins out again. Offering 10-feet of board, the Astro Whopper Deluxe is a spacious, stable and durable board
  • Well Sized Anti-Slip Pad: If you’re dog is going to be sat with you (many like to be right at the front), then the anti-slip pad on the Astro Whopper Deluxe will be of good use

  • None to report: you’ll find this a hard choice to beat

Tower Paddle Boards Adventurer 2 ISUP (10'4")

  • Another Big Board: Notice the theme yet? Yes, the Adventurer 2 is another great choice from a space and stability perspective
  • Well Constructed: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Adventurer 2 is a well put together board made with military-grade PVC and drop-stitched - nice and durable for taking your dog out often
  • Huge Weight Limit: Of 350 lbs, meaning you should comfortably be able to take out your dog and not worry about the board’s buoyancy

  • It Could Be Cheaper: Yet this isn’t really a con because I believe the Tower boards are top quality and very well manufactured. You’d be hard pressed to find another board this good at this price
